Mary Jane Shoes
Are Mary Jane shoes still in style? Absolutely YES! 2023 brought with it the rise of Mary-Jane shoes, now in 2025, the style is still in high demand. Here at Sheneil Shoes, we notice our customers are gravitating towards flatter, less chunky versions. For an edgier look, why not consider a sling-back style with the Mary-Jane cross strap, or the double strap flat ballet pump style.
Why are they called Mary Jane?
Mary Janes are the updated title for the previously known bar shoes or shoes with a bar across the front of the foot. They are named after the character Mary Jane (the sweetheart of Buster brown) in the Buster Brown comic strip. The Brown Shoe Company in Missouri US, pushed this name change in 1904.
Why are they so popular?
Although traditionally considered school shoes, the Mary Jane became popular in the 1920s with young women in the “Flapper” era. Due to their comfortable and practical style, the shoe has had another major comeback in 2023, leading it to be named The Shoe of the Year! Usually in a black patent style, the Mary Jane can have varying heel heights, with the strap across the foot being its signature feature.
The Mary Jane is very popular due to its usually lower heel and strap across the foot, giving extra support and stability. It can also be worn with trousers, skirts or dresses, making it an extremely versatile shoe.
How to style Mary-Janes for 2025
Undoubtedly, pointed toe flats, metallic finishes, mesh and studs/buckle details are huge for 2025 and there's a huge selection of Mary Janes incorporating these trends.
For a fresh take on styling, we recommend pointed-toe Mary Jane shoes with wide-leg trousers to elongate the silhouette while maintaining clean lines.
Play with Textures:
2025’s approach to styling Mary-Jane's invites a tactile experience. Mesh, woven leather, and high-shine metallic finishes are all on trend and great additions to your wardrobe. Play with mixing shiny and matte textures, or mesh with flowy fabrics for an intentionally stylish look.
Monochromatic Looks:
The trend toward monochrome outfits gives Mary Jane's new life, allowing them to punctuate a sleek, tonal outfit or blend seamlessly into it. opt for black-on-black for an understated look, or we love to mix creams and neutrals. Brands such as The Row are embracing understated luxury, and a clean, head-to-toe single colour creates a cohesive look where the Mary Jane becomes either a subtle accent or the focal point.
Socks and Sheer Tights:
Don’t shy away from styling Mary Janes with socks or sheer tights. Loved by Gen-Z, socks are no longer just for warmth; they’re a stylistic choice. Sheer, embellished socks or graphic logo designs offer an intentional “off-duty ballerina” vibe, while slouchy ribbed or lace-trimmed socks give off an intentional retro feel. Tights in unexpected prints or textures, such as fishnet or opaque graphic styles, add layers of intrigue and complexity. A thick sock paired with a platform Mary Jane makes the shoe feel urban and rebellious, rather than dainty.
